Monitoring Scour at Bridge Piers in Rivers with Supercritical Flows

چکیده
Bridges crossing rivers wider than 50 m are typically supported by piers. In a mobile riverbed, scour occurs around bridge piers, and it is the main cause of collapses worldwide, especially during floods. While pier has been extensively studied, there still lack measuring systems for monitoring in field. this paper, we present existing devices measurement analyze their comparative advantages disadvantages. A study case with scoured supercritical flow presented. Results show that patterns previously reported at laboratory scale also occur The measured supports hypothesis flows, even when having high speeds, do not produce higher subcritical flows. possible explanation linked sediment sizes flows discussed. Further, field measurements piers needed to enhance our understanding complex nearly unexplored situation.

Prediction of scour depth around bridge piers using Gaussian process
A reliable prognostics framework is essential to prevent catastrophic failure of bridges due to scour. In the U.S., scour accounts for almost 60% of bridge failures. Currently available techniques in the literature for predicting scour are mostly based on empirical equations and deterministic regression models, like Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines, and do not predict the evolution o...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of Scour Hole Geometry around Circular Bridge Piers
Failure of the bridges due to local scour around their piers can cause serious life losses and property damages and create significant environmental problems. In this experimental study, scour hole geometry around circular bridge piers were investigated. The experiments were carried out in a rectangular flume 80 cm wide, 18.6 m long and 75 cm high by using uniform sediment with a median diamete...
متن کاملRetrofitting of Bridge Piers against the Scour Damages: Case Study of the Marand-Soofian Route Bridge
Bridge piers which are constructed in the track of high water rivers cause some variations in the flow patterns. This variation mostly is a result of the changes in river sections. Decreasing the river section, bridge piers significantly impress the flow patterns. Once the flow approaches the piers, the stream lines change their order, causing the appearance of different flow patterns around th...
متن کاملWhite Paper: Tiltmeter-Based Bridge Scour Monitoring
Scour is by far the primary cause of bridge failures in the United States. Scour and other hydraulic effects are particularly threatening because the deterioration is often invisible , hidden beneath turbid water. Many scour monitoring methods attempt to measure the development of scour pockets themselves. However, this is difficult due to debris — both floating and submerged — and shifting str...
متن کاملEffect of Collars and Bars in Reducing the Local Scour Around Cylindrical Bridge Piers
In the present work, the efficiency of single and double collar in reducing scour rate and depth around cylindrical bridge piers was studied experimentally. In order to reduce the strength of wake vortices, different numbers of bars were also installed at the downstream face of the pier in combination with a single collar. The best result was achieved for double collar when the collars were ins...
